Sacramental Preparation for First Holy Communion usually takes place for our Year 4 children and under usual circumstances the Preparation Programme would be delivered through the Parish. The children would receive monthly lessons from the Parish Catechists and this would be supported by lessons delivered within school. Obviously, due to the current restrictions, we are not able to deliver our programme in the usual way.
This year, we will be supporting parents / carers in order to help them to prepare their children at home. We will be providing each child with a Diocesan approved workbook entitled ‘I Belong’ (there is no cost to parents) – which is the programme which we previously followed in school and is a very self-explanatory and child-friendly book which takes children through the structure of the Mass and provides a range of pieces of scripture and linked activities to support children in the journey. Alongside this we will also be sharing a range of online resources which have been developed by the Diocesan team for Sacramental Preparation supported by our own online resources.
This will be a very different experience for our children as usually our programme is delivered through a combination of Church visits and class-based lessons delivered by myself and Mrs Savage as Parish Catechists, we will, of course, continue to support you.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. It is important that the children are able to make their First Holy Communion and begin their journey through the Sacraments, albeit in a different way this year. We will continue to support you and your child on the journey and if things improve with the current restrictions then we will review the delivery of the programme.
In the meantime, please continue to support and pray with your child.
